The guy who invented organic lawns, Jeff Gillman, contributed a post to The Garden Professors blog yesterday about Florida’s ban on lawn fertilizers. Watery Pinellas County is trying to prevent runoff problems.
But Gillman, who wrote the book “The Truth About Organic Gardening”, explains that unlike many plants such as corn, lawn grasses are pretty good at hanging on to nitrogen. Perhaps officials should have checked with Gillman, he has a better idea for legislation.
Plant clover. According to Gillman, clover and certain trees like black locust will give your lawn a constant nitrogen feed to keep it green. An easy fix, include clover in all lawn grass seed.
