Monarchs and milkweed
It’s been six years and one has to wonder why the monarchs won’t lay eggs on my milkweed. I’ve got the milkweed blooming strong, I’ve got the monarchs passing through, and nothing…
Then the other day I heard someone say in casual conversation to someone else, “Blah de blah de blah de blah monarchs don’t lay eggs in the shade.”
That’s it! That’s my answer! I’ve got my butterfly plants tucked towards the back of the garden under tall shade trees. If I move the plants to full sun I’ll get the monarch habitat I want.
Click this: Some interesting information at Monarch Butterfly about how California gets the 4th and final generation of monarchs who live the longest and are responsible for the next complete generational cycle. It’s a kid’s page, yet succinct.
