December 15, 2009When not to garden
Colleen Vanderlinden writes this for Treehugger.com: Slack off in the garden, get great soil.
The idea is that soil is it’s own ecosystem and we shouldn’t mess with it too much.
Stop raking fallen leaves. A mulch of organic matter protects soil from erosion, provides food for organisms, and helps maintain moisture levels.
Stop pulling annual plants. Cut the tops off and leave the roots behind to provide food for soil organisms who will build during the winter so you’ll have a healthy population by spring.
Stop double-digging and rototilling. It ruins soil structure and breaks up the tiny webs of mycorrhizae. Put your organic goodies on top and let the earthworms pull it under.
whatever
