March 9, 2011The tomato that keeps on ticking
Now you’ve seen it with your own eyes: the tomato that I planted last summer, didn’t stop through winter, laughed off a few frost days, and is blooming like mad in March.
What is this miracle tomato? A grafted Cherokee Purple from Log House Plants. And, as we are discovering, grafting does wonders for these fruits.

It will be interesting to follow this plant through the entire summer. I had similar situation with a Rodale plant I started from seed in the early 80’s it was for their 50th anniversary. I had an incredible flush of fruit in early spring, first on my block with summer tomatoes however it had used up all its energy and fruited very poorly the rest of the season. I do not let my tomatoes overwinter any more. Space is precious for a nonproductive plant.

Some tomato varieties do only fruit once. Wonder if you had one of those?

I have long dreamed of an overwintered tomato plant, in a hypothetical way because I live in the PNW. It’s really exciting for me to see this. Thanks for sharing it.

I have an Early Girl doing the same thing. The plant looks better now than it did last summer.
