The smallest strawberries

You might think about alpine strawberries this year for a few reasons: Not only are the they sweetest of all strawberries, they make a good ground cover in sandy soils. Plus they’re the perfect cereal size.

Plan to share them with the Bluebirds though, and if you don’t mind sharing with birds in general, they’re a reliable Cedar Waxwing magnet too.

WINNER: Of the Dirt Couture $25 Gift Card - chosen at random - eyes closed - is Meg! She wrote this about her favorite spring thing: “Baby chicks. Nothing’s better than picking up that peeping box at the post office.”

Congrats to Meg- who can resist baby chicks?!  Visit
some at Centennial Farms at the Orange County Fairgrounds, one of the volunteer venues for Orange County Master Gardeners who introduce farm animals to
the youngsters.

Alpine strawberries - I try to pick some up when I am at Rogers Gardens, they don’t sell them everywhere.
I tried a white variety, but did not like the taste as well.  I embrace potager planting in my container garden and mix the alpine strawberries in with flowers. One book I read said not to mix them with cabbage however (even if you were thinking it would be a cute Easter planting, maybe it affects the taste.)  They are my reward for watering by hand, munch some while checking out how the rest of your plants are doing! People at my recent yard sale kept trying to get me to sell them!
