The second bulb season

You planted your daffodils, tulips and hyacinths already. We get that they are up and possibly blooming. But just when you thought it was safe to venture out in the sunshine, it’s time to shop the second bulb season – for dahlias, tuberous begonias, gladiolus, caladiums, callas, cannas and tuberose.

OK, at least get thee to the dahlia bin. These architectural blooms are worth growing despite the space they consume. Not only will they fill vases for indoor arrangements, they bloom for the entire summer season.

Plant deep, stake soon in the process, water once a week, feed once a month and then pick, pick, pick to keep the pompons coming. Only a few fat dahlia tubers in full sun a whole garden makes.

Check your favorite nursery now for the safest selection. Safe meaning do not click this link to Swan Island Dahlias or touch the button for the 2009 Premier Collection. Yikes! We warned you.
