The patch of dirt they call the Hell Strip

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think Lauren Springer coined the term Hell Strip in her early book The Undaunted Garden. Hell Strip is that strip of dirt between the sidewalk and curb where nothing wants to grow, dogs visit frequently and homeowners rarely go except to step out of the car.

It’s a hard life for plants on a Hell Strip with radiated heat from hard surfaces on all sides, but Springer figured out a way to make it work with heat tolerant plants. So did this Huntington Beach homeowner who found it a nice place to play with cactus and other succulents.
