The Knock Out rose

I’m not one to grow super-hybrid anything…often over-bred plants wind up resembling cartoon characters of their real plant selves. But the newish ‘Knock Out’ rose called ‘Sunny’ has me tempted. The Conrad-Pyle web site says ‘Knock Out’ is the most disease resistant rose on the market.

I like the way it looks old-school, plus I am a sucker for butter yellows.

William Radler’s goal was to breed the maintenance out of roses. He recommends hedge trimmers in the spring, says the shrubs are self cleaning (no deadheading), drought resistant and bloom every 5 weeks. Read his story here.

Ooooh! They’re single-flowered (not a real nursery term, I don’t know them…) not with a bajillion petals. Some roses have so many petals they look more like Peonies. I prefer heavily scented roses with fewer petals.
On the other hand, I love Peonies, too, but hard to grow in So Cal Zone 22, so maybe I should try them beaucoup-petaled ones! Sigh…decision, decisions.

Very nice, reminds me a lot of my favorite line of roses, the Meidiland group of ‘Bonica’, ‘Ruby’, ‘Scarlet’, ‘Crimson’, and my absolute favorites ‘Sevilliana’.  All are disease and insect free…at least mine have been disease and insect free for the last 10 years or so…haven’t used any form of chemicals or pesticides on them ever!  Very heavy blooming, beautiful glossy green foliage, also self cleaning and repeat blooming all through the year.  Some are great for hedges and others make very good ground covers.  Star roses, the grower of the Knock Out roses also says they make great companion plantings for the Knock Out line.  This yellow one would be a great addition to my yard!
