The bad news is

California is considered the most flammable state in the union with a fire season that lasts 8 months. Douglas Kent, author of Firescaping: Creating fire-resistant landscapes, gardens, and properties in California’s diverse environments (Wilderness Press) says don’t wait until you smell smoke to get your property prepared for flames or accessible to firefighters.

Thinking fires are not about you cause you live too far from the wilderness? Here’s a gem: Kent says most houses catch fire from floating embers, not direct flames.

And another ditty: Did you know that if you’ve got lots of junk in the driveway and a fire flickering in the back, that firefighters might roll on by to the next house? Yup, Douglas not only tells you how to be ready with brush clearance and defensible space ideas, but really ready with all kinds of inside information.
