February 27, 2009Step this way on something scented
What looks like soft, steppable mounds of moss in this Japanese maple garden are actually a more appropriate plant for Southern California, lime thyme.
Thyme is a perfect between-the-cracks plant, needing and even preferring the dry crown and radiant heat that the flagstones provide.
From 4-inch pots planted in early spring, lime thyme puffs out in the summer and offers a delicious and scented walk in full sun. Use it as a ground and bulb cover, too.
