I believe there is no such thing as a boring shrub, only thing boring is the people that put their shrubs together in bland ways. Take this pic from in a garden. Not a flower in sight, but wow.

Well, it is too water consumptive but the idea of shrubs (and small trees) as a major player here can translate to our gardens. Of course i would be using natives for much of it.

Beautiful—but not very appropriate for water-starved Southern California. The lawn alone would take as much water as that needed by 5 average families. There has to be a better way for SoCal.
