Pop quiz - win something

Ron the Plant Man, one of my favorite email buddies (cause he sends me long and detailed and funny plant stories) is trying to identify this iris. Don’t call it a dietes, (click for closeup) cause he already knows it isn’t.

Of all the correct answers, a winner will be chosen at random to win…..wait for it…....Hose Clothes, the sassy little slipcover for your garden hose.

Well today do I ever have egg on my face!  Yesterday when I sent Cindy the email requesting her help in identifying the plant in the photo, here is the caption I clicked on to get to the web site showing the photo of the plant I was trying to identify: “yellow African iris (Dietes iridioides) | Flickr - Photo Sharing!”  As you can see it calls it Dietes iridioides, and I knew for sure that wasn’t it’s correct name, and that is how they had it labeled as of yesterday! Now today, when I clicked on Cindy’s link, it has it labeled as Neomarica longifolia, and with using that name, I’m sure that it is now labeled correctly.

The reason I was asking Cindy for help is that I have a couple of these plants in my yard….don’t ask me where they came from as I would have to incriminate myself if I told you.  For six years I have searched to find the correct name and I knew that Cindy would be able to help me.  Thanks to all of you who correctly identified it for me…and thanks to the person who somehow quickly corrected the photo name on the inter net!

By the way, for those of you who won’t get the really great hose cover, I have probably a dozen or so of the plantlets on the plant in my yard and would gladly share them with the first ones who want one.  Offer only good until they are gone.  I live in north Orange County and you would have to pick them up if you are interested.  You can email me at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

Ron, I’ll stick up for you. The plant didn’t have that caption this morning when I created the post. Swear!

Cindy says:

Oh yeah. I saw John Schoustra today, THE iris guy of Greenwood Gardens. He’s supposed to pipe up, but then, we may already have the answer.
