March 12, 2010One year anniversary of Dirt du jour!
When one starts a web adventure in their pajamas at home, it all seems like a good idea when the coffee is hot and the ideas are rolling out of one’s head. After a year though, one should evaluate for sure. It appears like readers heartily enjoy their daily dose of garden news as much as I like creating it.
One thing I try to keep in mind is to keep it brief. Nobody wants to read long, preachy dissertations on mycorrhizae, at least not in their email. I like to keep my posts fun, funky and fast to read. After all, many of you are at “work” when you read them.
Here’s a little more about you in the first year:
You’ve racked up 109,000 page views in all with total combined hits of 440,000. Not bad considering that the bulk of my readers read Dirt du jour in their email and don’t visit the web site at all.
Daily newsletters equal 480,000. Good thing I don’t have to buy stamps.
Most of you live in the United States, but there is a solid group (yeah!) in Canada and Australia and sprinkles from places as far away as Maylasia, Serbia and Iran.
In the United States, California gardeners are the biggest demographic followed by Texas and New York.
In California, Los Angeles readers out-rank every other region with San Diego a close second. San Francisco readers are gaining, though.
I’ve received my biggest traffic spikes from the Fresh Dirt blog at Sunset and from the Los Angeles Times blog LAatHome. Frugal Luxuries and Life on the Balcony also contributed to traffic spikes. Thanks!
Subjects you clicked on the most? After “Garden blogs you’ll love” you chose design, chickens and posts about nude gardening. Hey, it is what it is. Just saying. Anecdotally, readers tell me they enjoy “whatever” more than anything else.
There are so many celebrity gardeners who subscribe to Dirt du jour that it’s hard to mention them all, so I won’t, plus I promised privacy.
So just wanted to thank everybody for signing up and making my first year a success and ask if there is anything you’d like to see on Dirt du jour? Click comments below.

Hi Cindy: With not a lot of time to read your blog every day, they’re saved to savor later— I share a lot of the ideas/designs and love the quotes and newsy bits. The one today about finding a coin of value in a garden in England will go into my own newsletter to the Daughters of the British Empire here in So. Cal.Keep it up - and keep on informing. And I would love to know your thoughts on mycorrhizae. Congratulations!
