New Aussie plant called ‘Joey’

I thought it was celosia at first, but then the blue and leathery leaves didn’t match up. With a bit of snooping I found the plant I spied in Irene Dunlap’s Newport Beach garden, a garden you’ll get to see on June 6. More about that later.

Turns out this unusual plant is something completely new, and how often does that happen? Ptilotus exaltatus has hot pink tips on top of silver plumes. It’s common name is ‘Joey’.

‘Joey’, like its namesake, thrives through heat and drought. In fact, do not over-water ‘Joey’ or it won’t live long.

This new foot-tall perennial was introduced in 2008 and is available at Plant Depot in San Juan Capistrano and probably other neighborhood nurseries.
