June 7, 2010Never been a big fan of agapanthus?
Me neither. But then I saw Dan Hinkley speak last week in Newport Beach and he was all about agapanthus up there in Washington. He told the crowd he grows up to 60 kinds, which got me thinking “are there really 60 kinds of agapanthus and do we need to be such snobs about them?”
A plant search on the Monrovia Nursery website resulted in 10. Loving the darker blues that are showing up in the nurseries lately like Monrovia’s ‘Midknight Blue’ pictured above. I’ve seen this one up close and personal and its the deepest blue you’ll find in nature.
Or am I just loving it cause Dan Hinkley does? What a follower!
whatever
C and G News —Plant theft in Warren public garden, but only the butterfly plants go missing. Like any politician - the mayor suggests the theft is political.
Carolyn Parker says:
I couldn’t agree more about agapanthus, but Dan could change my mind.

Re Gertie the J:
Wonder if she meant anyone liking magenta will suffer for it all their lives until they find salvation in other flora? Or perhaps that we love it so much we revel in it?
Gertie wouldn’t like my garden if she didn’t like magenta. Tough!

I wasn’t too fond of agapanthus UNTIL I was vacationing in Australia with friends last winter and saw them growing all over the place in large quantities.
They were lovely accents to all the public parks. I too some pictures for my records.

Agapanthus is like a lot of flowers- we only see one kind and we see that one to death so everyone thinks it is “common” and therefore lowly.
I have been coveting the beautiful blue at the L.A. Arboretum that Marc told me was “Elaine”, but I have never run across it for sale anywhere.
P.S. I did not get to go to hear Dan Hinkley-How was itand were there a lot of people there?

Surprisingly a pretty quiet night, not a lot of people there, but then it wasn’t well publicized either.
But Dan was as funny as ever.

I love agapanthus - have since I was a little girl. My mom had them in her garden and she’d use them as cut flowers with her yellow roses. The purple and yellow together are beautiful. But I didn’t know there were 60 kinds…Very Cool!!!

I have “Elaine” in my front border along with Simplicity Roses, Lycnis Rose Campion, Silversheen, all beneath my gorgeous 20yr old Metrosideros. Agapanthus used in large clumbs in your long border’s are wonderful and in So Cal, is a good subsitute for the alliums found in the renoun long borders at Great Dixter.
