May 19, 2009Impossible pitcher plants?
One wonders if Sarracenia really thrive outside their native habitats in mostly bogs, mostly pine forests, in places like Alabama. And then you see one like this in a coastal garden happily blooming in a pot.
Pitcher plants do want an unlikely combination of full sun and soggy soil. No nutrients, just a 50-50 mix of sand and peat that is watered with purified bottled or rain water. And when it doesn’t rain Sarracenia also want a wee bit of water in each cup so the plant can digest its favorite bug of the week. That’s it. Kindness is what usually kills them.
Gotta get one? Plant Delights Nursery has the plants and a how-to on building yourself a bog in case you want to go whole hog.
