sewage sludge in the garden, heavy metals in the garden March 29, 2010

Heavy metal ain’t the same as rock and roll

It’s what is left over AFTER sewage sludge (also called Biosolids) are treated and bagged as “organic” garden amendment.

Even though recycling our waste seems like a perfect environmental solution, critics say that human waste isn’t the only thing that gets flushed down the drain. Schools, hospitals, dry cleaners and industries of all sorts send their waste water to the same treatment plants, and that’s the problem. Pesticides, PCBs, dioxins, radioactive wastes, asbestos, heavy metals and petroleum compounds are what’s in sludge AFTER it has been treated.

Another reason to read the label on your amendments especially for the food garden.
