June 24, 2011Got fungus?
This year’s buzz about powdery mildew and other fungus has some gardeners reaching for the milk bottle. And not just the Jerry Baker-types either. Even the wine grape industry is looking into milk as a safe solution to control fungi among I and some kinds of blight. Early adopters are saying milk works even better than chemical fungicides, even though science is not sure why.
Mix 1 part of any kind of milk to 9 parts water and spray on your plants. More milk in the ratio is NOT better and makes a mess.
Milk can’t cure a bad case of existing fungus, but it is an excellent prevention solution. So clean up a badly infected plant first, then spray once a week.
whatever

Does this have to be cow’s milk? Or does Soy, Almond, or Rice Milk work also?
Thanks.

Seeing the photo of the milk bottles brought back memories of when I was a little kid….about 4 years old. I grew up in a small town in Idaho and the milkman delivered the milk to peoples back doors every morning. Milk wasn’t homogenized back then so the cream would rise to the top of the bottles when it sat for a short time. Well, I somehow aquired a taste for the cream and I would wake up when I heard the milkman leave the bottles of milk at our back door at about 5:00 in the morning and would get up, get dressed, quietly sneek out of the house and follow the milkmans route, and go to the neighbors back doors and open the milk bottles and drink the cream out of the milk bottles, put the paper lids back on and move on to the next house! Eventually I would get caught in the act when someone would come out to get the milk and there I would be happilly sucking the cream off the top of the milk. They would call my Mother to come and get me and I’d get punished…and my poor Mother would be so embarrassed! I was a slow learner however, or was it the taste of the cream that I couldn’t give up as after a few days there I would be again, drinking the cream off the top of the mild bottles early in the morning on a neighbors back porch!
