Cheering on the cherry blossoms

Beauty reigns at the Washington, D.C. Tidal Basin during the National Cherry Blossom Festival. Track the opening of the blooms on the Cherry Blossom Web Cam (tune in during daylight hours, Eastern time). Peak bloom is predicted for March 26-30.

Henry Mitchell, brilliant and late garden journalist for The Washington Post, commented on the capital’s cherry trees in his collected columns, One Man’s Garden:

The trees never look better than they do with a lagoon or lake to reflect them, and since the trees are large, it helps the effect if any architectural detail is simple, bold, and noble. The Jefferson Memorial is a good thing to put up to enhance the cherry trees, but difficult of attainment in the usual town garden.

Legal Matters—-When two neighbors love a cherry tree, but only one of them loves peacocks.
