January 21, 2011Aussies are my new “it” plant
Oh sure, I admit that I’m late to the game. I’ve seen so many spectacular Australian plants in landscapes, but then it never occurred to me to include them in my own. An email from Scott Daigre (Tomatomania) about Leucadendron ‘Wilson’s Wonder’ got me poking around Australian Native Plants Nursery in Ventura.
I finally get it. Duh?

I have been intrigued by Aussie plants ever since
I came across one at a garden show and am slowly
exploring the plant catagory, myself.
There was a lecture at The Late Show Gardens last year (from that nursury I think) that was a good introduction. I need to develop my Aussie accent however, because all the plant names sound so much cuter that way!
Two important things about Aussie plants:
1) They can work in Meditteranean gardens, so they
can be added to the “California Friendly” list.
2) Austrialian soil does not have phosphorus! Never
Adding fertilizer with phosphorus to your Aussie
plants will likely burn them up-DONT’T DO IT!
I liked the leucodendron photo that you showed- will
have to try that one. My “Safari Sunset” could be called my favorite plant because I have spent more time enjoying that one from my garden bench than any other plant in my collection. The colors are similar, and placing this plant where it is backlit by the sun gives you a plant that seems to glow- so pretty!
Another favorite of mine are the Chamelaucims, I like the “Lady Stephanie” variety- the lacy foliage
texture is a nice thing to add to the garden.
As you get more favorites- share them, because a lot of people still have to discover this plant group- you are definately not the last! Enjoy!

Jo O’Connel at Australian Native Plants is wonderful! She feeds my addiction to Grevilleas, Hakeas, and other Aussie wonders. She is a wonder of useful information for growing these beautiful plants.
