Are California poppies orange or golden?

A Michigan friend was in California one spring and he commented on “the orange wildflowers”. “Those aren’t orange”, retorted his California-raised wife, “those are golden poppies.” We’ll be celebrating California Poppy Day on Saturday, April 6. They grow all on their own in my SoCal yard—yellow or orange, they’re both golden to me.  Love them!

California poppies grow gloriously well in my South Georgia garden, reseeding in a big show. The strain I grow are definitely orange. I’ve grown a pale cream color, too.
