March 26, 2009I don’t know what it is….but I want one
New from Monrovia is red-leafed mukdenia, as if we knew there were mukdenias that were NOT red leafed, and as if we knew there was a plant CALLED mukdenia. Figures it is a Dan Hinkley introduction. Anyway….turns out mukdenia is a perennial ground cover that thrives in full to partial sun, with white bell flowers in spring atop big bronzed maple-like leaves that get redder as the season progresses. According to Monrovia it likes regular water and will want mulch until it spreads and covers an area.
Drip, drip.

You could call it mod, but maybe not. This 4 tier fountain from Dig in Palm Springs might be appropriate in many settings. Mediterranean, sure. Tropical patio, pure heaven. What about as a focal point in the lower 40? Wherever you site it its drippy quality is sure to be a bird magnet.
Dig says it’s easy to set up, the pump is included and it’s easy to move around if you change your mind.
Weekend cause
Don’t forget about “Earth Hour” the micro-commitment to turn off your lights tonight from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. no matter what time zone you live in.
“World Wildlife Fund is asking individuals, businesses, governments and organizations around the world to turn off their lights for one hour – Earth Hour – to make a global statement of concern about climate change and to demonstrate commitment to finding solutions.”
Who will flipping the switch besides us? The Las Vegas Strip, the Mormon Temple, Sears Tower, Santa Monica Pier, Empire State Building, the Great Pyramids of Giza, plus 2700 U.S. cities and 84 countries.
